Assembly notes

Start with the original Rhino design, the actual final photographs and BOM.csv. The Blender model is for presentation and interaction; it fills gaps that still require measurement.

  1. Check head/hoop fit, shell bearing edge, lug alignment and the six tension positions in the native CAD before fabrication.
  2. Dry-fit the fork, shaft and fixed bearing. Verify that the fork is physically connected to the shaft and that it moves without rubbing the shell or hoop.
  3. Fit the short return spring between the shaft’s cross screw and fixed brass anchor. Measure safe travel and spring preload on the actual mechanism. The old long sensing spring is not part of this version.
  4. Mount the lav centrally below the head and the contact pickup near the edge. The lav captures the broader acoustic excitation; the contact pickup helps distinguish the rim.
  5. Recover the microphone bias/preamp and Bela input details before connecting them. The small second board in the cleaned render represents an unverified audio-conditioning package.
  6. Route short signal/power cables clear of head and moving parts. Add serviceable covers only after checking physical clearance and heat; the clear lids are a proposed finish.
  7. Match battery regulation/protection/charging to the actual Bela power requirements and chosen pack. This archive does not establish the historical battery specification or wiring diagram.
  8. Fit the jack plate beneath the finished PLUG IN plaque and the selector beneath the three-symbol plaque. Check their actual mounting/wiring, rather than copying the render as a drilling template.
  9. Start from the saved snare coefficients, then establish latch endpoints by ear and test microphone-zone training on the actual drum. The browser’s fixed mapping is not a recovered physical calibration.
  10. Verify acoustic sound, quiet notes, brushes, rim/head separation, latch return, output level, CPU load, noise and service access before a performance.

For software exploration, ../software/pure-data/desktop.pd is the portable audition and ../software/pure-data/grooves.pd plays the same ten studies. ../software/pure-data/original-project/ preserves the recovered Pd sources; large recording/training datasets and hardware-specific runtime are separate. Original images and videos remain on the portfolio page.
